Twitter’s New Terms of Service Includes Advertising

Twitter_4The monetization of Twitter has been a huge topic in the advertising and tech communities since the 2006 company started making huge gains in the recent years. On Thursday, Biz Stone and the crew down at Twitter released their new Terms of Service. Most surprising of all the changes was the new possibilities for advertising.

Twitter’s terms of service now includes the following paragraph:

“The Services may include advertisements, which may be targeted to the Content or information on the Services, queries made through the Services, or other information. The types and extent of advertising by Twitter on the Services are subject to change. In consideration for Twitter granting you access to and use of the Services, you agree that Twitter and its third party providers and partners may place such advertising on the Services or in connection with the display of Content or information from the Services whether submitted by you or others.”

So, what does this mean?

In a nutshell money. But it could also mean that Twitter will loose the thing that most people love about the micro-blogging site and that’s the absence of advertising.

Everyone is bombarded with advertising on a daily basis from every site on the internet. The key to effective internet advertising is to not be disruptive. This especially holds true to Twitter. Although a specific advertising plan has not been laid out, the next step is huge. They have to come up with a way to create effective advertising that doesn’t anger their very loyal Twitterers.

This is obviously huge news for advertisers and businesses because now we have access to the 45 million Twitter users.

So although we don’t know where this advertising opportunity will take us, it is an exciting day. Keep watching BOALT, because I guarantee you we will have a few ideas in the future.
