In October of last year Getty Images, one of the largest stock photo agencies on the planet, began sifting through the millions of images on Flickr in search of new photos to add to their collection. Since they began their search they’ve added 60,000 images to their stock collection.
In early November Getty Images created the Getty Images Artists group so that Flickr users could more easily submit their work for consideration. Each month users can submit 10 photos and the staff at Getty Images search through the entries to see if your image will add anything to their collection.
Like Getty Images, I search Flickr endlessly looking for great images and great photographers. (It’s a bit of an obsession.) However, my searches are simply to find great artists, for which Flickr is overflowing.
I wanted to highlight three photographers that I found during some of my late night searches. All of them are true artists and I always look forward to their new images.
I first read about Miss Aniela (Ann-yella) in a magazine article. I’d only been on Flickr for a week or two and wasn’t sure what to expect. I read the article and then looked her up and immediately fell in love with Their Evening Banter.
My favorite photos are from her Multiplicity collection. Most of her fans agree. They’re so popular that she’s even created a book on Blurb showcasing the images with a how-to section for everyone to learn her technique.
Razorbern is fairly new to photography. He told me he had worked mainly as a graphic artist for before picking up a camera and finding his “photographic muse” on a trip to Brazil in 2006. I’ve been blown away by his collections: People and Architecture and Cityscapes.
His work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Adbusters, The Village Voice, Artillery, and as cover art on publications by the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba, Brasil.
Pic@ is new to photography. Like Razorbern she is self-taught but for her photography isn’t a job. To call it a hobby would be insulting considering her talent. She’s only had her camera for a year. She credits Flickr for many of the things she’s learned.
“There are some seriously good photographers on Flickr who are very generous with constructive comments and encouragement,” Pic@ said.
I came across The Growing Castle on Flickr’s Explore section where they often highlight interesting work of the day and I found her just lines collection to be amazing. Although new to this, she’s progressing in leaps and bounds beyond some of her more seasoned professionals.
This short list of photographers is far from comprehensive. And narrowing down to three was near impossible. Now that you’ve seen some of the photographer’s I like, post some of your favorite Flickr photographers in the comments.
