Industry Specific Social Media Strategies

Industry Specific Social Media Strategies

This past weekend, I gave a presentation at SocialDevCamp East which was held at the University of Baltimore.  The presentation was on Industry Specific Social Media Strategies.  The format consisted of a presentation, a contest and then an open discussion in the end.

Members of the audience were given an opportunity to pitch the perfect social media strategcy as it pertained to their industry and then everybody voted on which strategy was the best.  Mary Hartney from the Baltimore Sun won first prize which was an Apple Nano.

In my presentation, I spoke about 3 specific industries: hospitality, real estate and automotive.  I also provide information on social media demographics, campaign measurement and some random tools on how make managing your social media life easier.

Thank you again to everybody who attended my presentation.  Feel free to download the presentation.

Thank you for the posts:

Apps for Democracy – Submission Update

Apps for Democracy – Submission Update

We’ve finally decided on the application we will be submitting to the Apps for Democracy innovation contest.  After juggling around some different ideas, we were torn between the idea of building an application targeted towards businesses or consumers.  We felt that the application would get more use from consumers so we decided to build a D.C. Historic Tours application.

D.C. Historic Tours will allow for consumers to select from a variety of historical options provided by the D.C. Data Catalog including historic streets, structures, landmarks and sites.  After selecting the destinations that they would like to visit, the application will plot and route the most efficient walking or driving tour.  In addition to integrating with the D.C. Data Catalog, the application will utilize Flickr to provide images of the historic sites as well as restaurants and reviews along their route from Yelp.

BOALT presents at BarCamp DC 2008

BOALT presents at BarCamp DC 2008

BarCamp DC 2008This weekend I had the pleasure of presenting at BarCamp DC 2008.  It was the first BarCamp  I have attended. BarCamp is a technology unconference where topics are suggested but there is no proper format.  BOALT got some coverage from the Washington Post both on their website and in Monday’s business section.  It was pretty exciting given that there were over 30 presentors and only a couple were mentioned.

My presentation topic was named, “Building  a web business in an uncertain economy.”  And for those of you that did not attend, I have outlined the presentation below.

BOALT attends AppsforDemocracy.com Event

BOALT attends AppsforDemocracy.com Event

appsfordem.jpgI attended the AppsforDemocracy.com happy hour event last Thursday night.  It was a great event hosted by Peter Corbett.  The event kicked off an innovation contest which is looking for “talented technologists and creatives battling it out to see who can create the most useful applications from DC’s Data Catalog“.

BOALT will be submitting an entry to the contest early next month.  I think it’s great for the government in D.C. to make all their public data so available.  May the best man win!

BOALT sponsors TwinTech III

BOALT sponsors TwinTech III

BOALT will be sponsoring Twin Tech III held on Thursday, January 22th, 2009 from 6:00pm till 9:00 pm.  This will be the 3rd time BOALT attends Twin Tech and our second time sponsorship.  The event is hosted by the Northern Virginia Technology Council and iStrategyLabs.  We encourage anybody in the Washington, D.C. area to go. It’s an open bar and you’ll be able to mingle with the brightest minds in the tech/venture sector.  It should be a good time!

The brainchild behind Twin Tech is Peter Corbett
who started the event in order to bridge the gap between the veteran
and emerging technology communities in the capital region.  The second
event had over 1000 attendees and Peter is anticipates over 2000
attendees for TwinTech III.

TECH cocktail is trying to encourage the growth of technology in cities such as Washington, D.C.  Founded by Frank Gruber and Eric Olson in May of 2006, they offer a variety of events open to bloggers, technology enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and professionals interested in technology in under served technology communities.
